Purser Releases Hypnotically Beautiful New Single “Out of Hand”

The most recent release of indie folk rock artist, Purser, starts off in a haunting soundscape of synth tones layered with vocalizations and intricate fingerstyle guitar playing. As the melody of the song emerges, so do the rich vocals of Bobbie Purser as they take us on a journey of hopeful longing and the potential of unreciprocated feelings of love.

As the song progresses you can’t help but become entranced by the swelling dynamics paired with the vulnerable yet comforting vocals of Bobbie. As they explain “I want anyone listening to be comforted, to know I believe they’re courageous for experiencing and expressing something as terrifying as love. Especially queer love.“

At the bridge, you’re catapulted by the vocals into a transfixing state of dissonance paired equally with the ever-present yearning of the song’s mechanics. This is resolved soon enough in what seems to be an admission of understanding between the characters the lyrical story is focused on. You’re once again swayed into the dreamy state of the song's melody.

Bobbie states, “‘Out of Hand’ was inspired by the devastatingly aching text messages my friend sent me while she fell in love with her roommate (now girlfriend!!). She told me all the things she wished she could say to her love, and it brought me to reflect on my own gay awakening - that delicious and torturous tension between a relationship as it currently exists and its unspoken potential. Ugh.”

You’ll Probably Like Purser if You Like…

The folk-pop sensibilities of Madison Cunningham, melancholic tones of Phoebe Bridgers, intriguingly intricate vocalizations of Joni Mitchell, and charming storytelling of Sufjan Stevens. Or as Bobbie puts it, “It’s like if Lucy Dacus and Joni Mitchell kissed… with tongue.”

A Little More About Purser

When it comes to what compels Bobbie to create music, they say, “I’ve had the innate desire to create music my entire life. I don’t remember a time where I didn’t want to analyze lyrics, collect my own lyrics as they came to me, harmonize with everything, play every instrument…There’s nothing like the connection it gives me to my own spirit and those of the people around me.”

Bobbie Purser states of the choice to utilize their last name, “I used to daydream about going by Purser when I was younger - it’s always been my favorite part of my name. I’m making my middle school dreams come true.”

Coming Up Next

Bobbie explains, “there’s another single coming in late March/early April called “40 Loop” that will be this song’s upbeat counterpart! “40 Loop” will complete this little two-song story about having an existential crisis in the car.”

We will be anxiously awaiting the second half of this story, but maybe we’ll get a sneak peek of it at Purser’s next show this Sunday (2.19.23) at The 5 Spot. They’ll be sharing the stage with OTNES, Frank Samuel, and Demiatrix.
